How to Get Rid of Cockroaches Permanently Using Natural Methods

September 19, 2023 by BMA24

Cockroaches are unwelcome guests in any home, but you can effectively get rid of them using natural methods that are safe for you, your family, and your pets. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to eliminate cockroaches permanently using natural remedies.

1. Identify the Problem Areas:

  • Locate the areas where cockroaches are most active. Common hiding spots include kitchens, bathrooms, and dark, moist areas like basements.

2. Keep Your Home Clean:

  • Cockroaches are attracted to food residue and crumbs, so keep your home clean and free of food debris.
  • Store food in airtight containers.
  • Clean up spills and crumbs immediately.
  • Take out the trash regularly, and use a trash can with a tight-fitting lid.

3. Seal Entry Points:

  • Inspect your home for cracks, gaps, and holes where cockroaches can enter. Seal these entry points with caulk or weather stripping.

4. Use Natural Cockroach Repellents:

  • Several natural substances can repel cockroaches:
    • Bay Leaves: Place bay leaves in cabinets, drawers, and other cockroach-prone areas.
    • Cucumber Peels: Cockroaches dislike the smell of cucumbers. Place cucumber peels in areas where you’ve seen roaches.
    • Peppermint Oil: Mix a few drops of peppermint oil with water and spray it in infested areas.
    • Boric Acid: Boric acid is a natural insecticide. Sprinkle it in cracks and crevices where cockroaches hide. Be cautious if you have pets or small children, as boric acid can be toxic if ingested.

5. Create Homemade Cockroach Traps:

  • Make sticky traps by applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the inside of a glass jar. Place bait like a piece of bread or a fruit peel inside the jar to attract roaches. Once they climb in, they won’t be able to escape.

6. Use Diatomaceous Earth:

  • Diatomaceous earth is a natural, non-toxic substance that can kill cockroaches by damaging their exoskeletons. Sprinkle a thin layer of food-grade diatomaceous earth in cockroach-infested areas.

7. Keep Your Home Dry:

  • Cockroaches thrive in damp environments. Fix any plumbing leaks, and use dehumidifiers in damp areas of your home.

8. Monitor and Repeat:

  • Continue to monitor your home for signs of cockroaches, and repeat these steps as necessary until the infestation is completely gone.

9. Professional Help:

  • If your infestation is severe and natural methods aren’t effective, consider contacting a professional pest control service. They can use natural or eco-friendly pest control methods to tackle the problem.

10. Prevent Future Infestations:

  • Once you've eliminated the cockroach infestation, continue to practice good hygiene and sealing entry points to prevent future problems.

When dealing with cockroaches, remember that persistence is essential. Natural remedies may take some time to work, but they can effectively eliminate cockroaches from your home while reducing the use of potentially harmful chemicals.
