  • 🌽 1 cup cornmeal

  • 🌿 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 🌿 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 🌿 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • πŸ§… 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • πŸ₯› 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • πŸ₯š 1 large egg
  • πŸ₯› 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • πŸ₯€ Vegetable oil for frying

πŸ“ Directions:

1️⃣ Prepare the Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the chopped onion.

2️⃣ Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil until well combined.

3️⃣ Combine: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix; the batter should be thick.

4️⃣ Heat Oil: In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350Β°F (175Β°C).

5️⃣ Fry Hush Puppies: Using a small ice cream scoop or a spoon, carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the hush puppies in batches for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the hush puppies to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

6️⃣ Serve: Serve the hush puppies warm with your favorite dipping sauces, such as honey butter, tartar sauce, or ranch dressing.
