🍞 Indian Frybread Recipe 🍞

September 18, 2024 by BMA24

Indian Frybread is a traditional Native American dish that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This versatile bread can be enjoyed sweet with honey or powdered sugar, or savory as the base for Navajo tacos.

πŸ“‹ Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour 🌾
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder 🌿
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt πŸ§‚
  • 1 cup warm water πŸ’§
  • Vegetable oil for frying πŸ›’οΈ

πŸ“ Instructions:

1. Make the Dough:

  1. Mix dry ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add water:
    • Gradually add the warm water to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  3. Knead:
    • Lightly flour your hands and knead the dough for a minute or two, until it comes together and is smooth. Be careful not to overwork the dough.
  4. Rest the dough:
    • Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for about 10-15 minutes.

2. Shape the Frybread:

  1. Divide the dough:
    • Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions, rolling each piece into a ball.
  2. Flatten the dough:
    • Using your hands or a rolling pin, gently flatten each ball of dough into a disk, about 1/4-inch thick. Make sure not to roll them too thin or they won’t puff up properly when fried.

3. Fry the Bread:

  1. Heat the oil:
    • In a large skillet or deep frying pan, heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil over medium heat. The oil should reach about 350Β°F (175Β°C).
  2. Fry the dough:
    • Carefully place one piece of dough into the hot oil. Fry for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and puffed up.
  3. Drain:
    • Remove the frybread from the oil and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Repeat with the remaining dough.

4. Serve:

  1. Serve hot:
    • Enjoy the frybread warm with your choice of toppings. For a savory option, top with taco ingredients for Navajo tacos. For a sweet version, drizzle with honey, sprinkle with powdered sugar, or serve with jam.
