City Chicken – A Classic Comfort Dish!

Despite its name, City Chicken isn’t made with chicken! It’s a regional favorite made by skewering cubes of chicken, breading them, and frying or baking until golden brown. This Great Lakes & Midwest favorite is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and absolutely delicious!

🕒 Prep Time: 15 minutes

⏳ Cook Time: 35 minutes

⏱ Total Time: 50 minutes

🍽 Servings: 6 skewers

🔥 Calories per Serving: ~400

🛒 Ingredients

  • 🥩 1 ½ lbs chicken
  • 🥢 6 wooden skewers (soaked in water for 30 minutes)
  • 🥚 2 eggs
  • 🥄 2 tbsp milk
  • 🌾 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 🍞 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 🧂 1 tsp salt
  • 🌶️ ½ tsp black pepper
  • 🌿 ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 🌿 ½ tsp onion powder
  • 🛢 ½ cup vegetable oil, for frying
  • 🧈 2 tbsp butter, melted (for baking)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Skewers:
Thread 4-5 chicken onto each skewer.

2️⃣ Set Up Breading Station:

  • In one bowl, whisk together eggs and milk.
  • In another bowl, mix flour, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

3️⃣ Bread the Meat:

  • Roll each skewer in flour mixture, then dip into egg mixture, then coat again in flour mixture for a thick crust.

4️⃣ Fry to Golden Brown:
Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry skewers for 2-3 minutes per side, just until golden (they’ll finish cooking in the oven).

5️⃣ Bake for Tenderness:
Transfer to a greased baking dish. Brush with melted butter, cover with foil, and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes.

6️⃣ Serve & Enjoy:
Let rest for 5 minutes, then serve with mashed potatoes, gravy, or a side of mustard!
