Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Bread Pudding with Vanilla Sauce

Ingredients (Serves 6-8):

For the Bread Pudding:

  • 6 cups stale bread cubes (such as French or brioche)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts), toasted

For the Vanilla Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Bread:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  • Place the stale bread cubes in the prepared baking dish.

2. Make the Custard:

  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until well combined.

3. Combine Ingredients:

  • Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread cubes down to ensure they’re soaked evenly.
  • If using, sprinkle raisins or dried cranberries over the top.

4. Bake the Pudding:

  • Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan or roasting pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water to create a water bath.
  • Carefully transfer to the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until the pudding is set and the top is golden brown.

5. Prepare the Vanilla Sauce:

  • In a saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.
  • Add the heavy cream and granulated sugar. Stir to combine.

6. Infuse with Flavor:

  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

7. Serve with Love:

  • Once the bread pudding is baked and slightly cooled, drizzle individual servings with warm vanilla sauce.
  • Sprinkle toasted chopped nuts over the top for an added crunch and nutty flavor.
